Reputation Lab-Davos

DAVOS 2012, Hotel Steigenberger Belvedere

Companies, governments and countries all have reputations, and reputations have value. In order to protect the value of a reputation, reputational risk is something that must be explicitly managed. The reputation lab will start by addressing confusion about how to manage reputation and to define where Reputational Risk management can have an impact.

Is risk as a category in its own right on par with such things as market, credit and operating risk? Where can the value of reputation be shown on the balance sheet? How do we recognizing the distinction between character and reputation?

The Reputation lab is centered on the launch of 5 publications: Trust Meltdown III, CSR Index 2012, Africa Index 2012, The Global Peace Report 2011, Annual Dialogue Report 2011

The Reputation Lab at the Steigenberger Belvedere 2012 is the place to hear about the latest trends and learn how to become less dependent on others when it comes to managing your own reputation.

 Africa Growth Report

The featured 2012 Africa Growth Index in this report looks at the perceptions created about the continent. Rather than measuring actual growth, the Index, which is published annually, compares how media coverage on individual African countries reflects reality. It draws, amongst others from the reputable Mo Ibrahim Index, which contains a wealth of information on the democratic progress of African countries. With solid and tangible variables, this index itself allows for the detailed assessment of the African context and of particular importance, provides historical data. Experts in the field of political, social and economic analysts provide further background for a more thorough understanding of the opportunities and challenges presenting themselves to Africa in 2012.

The Africa Growth Report was launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos on 25 January 2012

  CSR Index 2012

The world is getting more fragile, and whichever role you play, either in the corporate world or in the public administration, you need to take into account this time the transition we are living through will produce a durable impact on how we work and live. The overall degree of fragility is a combination of a number of different factors including: 1.the end of cheap oil 2.the digital transformation, 3.the impact of climate change, 4.the emergence of new forms of organizing collective actions, and harnessing knowledge which are calling for a more responsible, transparent and equitable use of available resources.

No matter how these factors will play out, sustainability will not be just an environmental issue, but it will soon become the managerial challenge of our age, and civilization: the world, as we know it, is about to change in surprising and unpleasant ways, which can be addressed if governments and corporations will be capable of defining new ways of cooperation.

  Trust Meltdown III

Everybody in the financial sector expected 2009 to be rough; the headlines following the Lehman collapse were frank. But they expected the media would calm down in 2010 & 2011 as better results proved that the finance sector was no longer losing money.

Now, in 2012 the picture is clear: Yes, the financial results presented in 2011 were much better than expected. But yet, the headlines remained the same. From a reputational standpoint no recovery has happened as the media on Wall Street and Main Street keep asking the same questions: What have you learned from the crisis? And what was implemented in 2009, 2010 and 2011 to make sure another Meltdown will not happen?

The Trust Meltdown III was presented at WEF - Davos January 2012.

 Global Peace Report

Malta November 9: The preoccupation of the US news networks with conflict around the world, and particularly in the Middle East, creates a feedback loop of suspicion amongst media audiences. Comparing the results of Gallup's 2010 poll on Americans? attitudes towards the 20 nations that dominate news and foreign policy, one finds that there is a clear correlation between the level of conflict coverage focus in US television media and national attitude towards the country. Countries that are not reported on by US media in regard to conflicts are favorably viewed by Americans. Those countries which receive significant conflict coverage, such as Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and areas held by the Palestinian authority, are perceived negatively.
