Zurich, August 21st, 2008: Hostilities that have been building for a long time finally erupted into full scale armed conflict which catapulted Georgia onto the international media agenda. Before the declaration of war, international TV News coverage of Georgia was minimal, and the probability exist that with the declaration of a ceasefire it will fade just as fast.
‘TV exclusive audiences´ will not be exposed to the depth of coverage offered by print media. The understanding of the realities surrounding the Georgian situation will be lost to many and Georgia will be remembered as having an isolated Georgian problem.
Stronger interest in Georgia by various international TV news broadcasts is determined by different factors, such as political involvement or visible violent stories. With a lack of these, interest and coverage is set to die down fast.
Continued exposure and awareness of the Georgian situation is vital for foreign assistance, foreign aid, and foreign investment. By not actively addressing the correct media outlets and markets Georgia stands to lose more than it already has.
