Michael Jackson´s image remained heavily burdened
2009-06-26

Regardless of being acquitted of all charges against him in 2005, the image of Michael Jackson in the mainstream media never recovered from this burden in his lifetime. The analysis of Media Tenor shows, that the court case, which ended 2005 in Jackson´s favor, remained the last issue for which he managed to get the attention of the network news broadcasts. Neither the 25th anniversary of Jacksons “Thriller” - the biggest selling album in the history of recorded music – nor the planned comeback concerts for 2009 managed to get Jackson back into the main news.

“Apart from scandals and death, celebrities are rarely featured in the main news broadcasts of the national networks”, so Mikael Erola of Media Tenor International. “While this might make sense in terms of prioritization, it also makes it virtually impossible for those once accused to truly recover from the image damage, even if the accusations eventually would not hold up in a court of law.”

Media Tenor International analyzed the news coverage of ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC in the time frame from June 1st 2004 until May 31st 2009 with a total of 150 portrayals of Michael Jackson in at least 5 seconds of air time. 90% (135) of those portrayals dealt with Jackson´s court case, while only one of the reports concentrated on his career and another one on issues of culture.
